Stars - Janis Ian

박진영이라는 가수를 별로 좋아하진 않지만, 그가 한 말 중에 유일하게 아직도 기억하고 있을 정도로 좋은 것이 있다. 좋은 음악일 수록 악기를 적게 쓴다는 내용이었던 것 같은데, 실제로 그가 음악을 만들 때 언제나 그런 식으로 만들고 있지는 않은 것 같지만, 어쨌든 백번 지당하신 말씀이다.

요점은 그거다. 굉장히 많고 생소한 어휘들로 쓴 글이 좋은 글이 아니며, 스타 배우들이 대거 출연하는 영화가 좋은 영화가 아닌 것과 같은 맥락이다. 예술가가 원래 의도했던 것을 소비자에게 잘 전달하기 위해서, 위에 언급된 것들은 방해가 되었으면 되었지 득이 되지는 않는다는 말이다. 미디어는 사람과 사람의 소통을 돕는 것이 목적이 아닌가. 소통에 방해가 되는 것은 제거해야 마땅한데, 방해가 될 지도 모르는 것을 덕지덕지 달아서 보내는 것은 소통의 대상이 되는 할 말에 별로 자신이 없다는 것 밖에 되지 않는다.

어쨌든, 간소하고 명확한 어휘를 사용하여 정말 공감가는 글을 쓰는 사람들을 보면, 이게이게 정말 글쟁이구나, 하는 생각이 드는 것이고, 별 유명하지 않은 배우들과 특별하지 않은 영상 효과로 몰입하는 영화를 만드는 감독을 보면, 이게이게 정말 영화쟁이구나 하는 생각이 든다. 마찬가지로 적은 개수의 악기로 감동을 선사하는 뮤지션들의 노래를 들으면, 정말 제대로 된 딴따라라는 생각이 든다. 언제나 통기타 한 대로만 모든 노래를 만들 수는 없겠지만, 통기타 한 대로만 반주하면서, 기타를 치는 손가락의 머뭇거림까지 다 느껴질 정도의 깊은 울림을 주는 노래들을 만나면, 그래서 더욱 반갑다. 안아주고 싶을 정도로.

언젠가 이런 노래를 만들고 싶다는 생각을 하고 있었는데, 늦은 밤 이 절절한 노래를 듣자 하니, 통기타 한 대와 절제된 보컬 만으로 7분이 넘게 연주되고 있는 이 노래가 정말 음악을 제대로 하는 사람이 만든 노래가 아닌가, 하는 생각이 든다.
